With Ademola Lookman’s win, Nigeria now country with highest CAF POTY Award (photos past winners)

Nigeria has now become the country with the highest Confederation of African Football Men’s Player of the Year winner, following the emergence of Ademola Lookman as the 2024 African Player of the Year.
The Nigerian and Atalanta of Italy star was named the African Player of the Year at the prestigious 2024 Confederation of African Football Awards held in Marrakesh, Morocco, Monday night.

The feat also saw Nigeria officially becoming the country with the most CAF Player of the Year Award, winning the award seven times, surpassing Côte d’Ivoire, on six.
Also, Nigeria is the only country to win the CAF POTY Award in 2 consecutive years on 3 occasions, with different players.
Nigerian players who have won the prestigious award include Rashidi Yekini (1993), Emmanuel Amuneke (1994), Kanu Nwankwo (1996 & 1999), Victor Ikpeba (1997), Victor Osimhen (2023) and Ademola Lookman (2024).
Côte d’Ivoire won the award six times with Yaya Toure winning 4 times and Didier Drogba winning it twice.
While Cameroon has won the award 5 times. Former Barcelona ace Samuel Etoo won the award 4 times and Patrick Mboma won it once.
Senegal has also won the award thrice through El Hadji Diouf (twice) and Saido Maine (once).

While Abedi Pele of Ghana, Mustapha Hadji of Morocco, Kanoute of Mali, George Weah of Liberia, Riyad Mahrez of Algeria and Emmanuel Adebayor of Togo have all won the award once.
