2026 World Cup: Five teams that have announced their intention

The first round of matches at the 2026 FIFA world cup has produced excitement, goals and a few surprises. While some of the tournament favourites stumbled, others wasted no time in announcing that they are in North America for serious business.

It is often said that the world cup is a marathon and not a sprint. That may be true, but a convincing start can boost confidence, intimidate opponents and set the tone for the rest of the tournament. Judging by the opening round, five teams have particularly caught the eye.

Germany undoubtedly produced the performance of matchday one. Their emphatic 7-1 demolition of Curaçao was not just about the scoreline but the manner in which it was achieved. They attacked with purpose, defended with discipline and looked every inch a team determined to erase memories of recent disappointing world cup campaigns.

Defending champions Argentina also began on an impressive note. Their 3-0 victory over Algeria reflected the composure and confidence expected of a title holder. Lionel Messi once again demonstrated that class is permanent, leading by example and reminding the football world that Argentina remain a force to reckon with.

France, finalists at the last world cup, equally justified their status as one of the favourites. Although Senegal made life difficult for them, the French side showed maturity, patience and quality to secure a deserved 3-1 victory. Champions are often judged by how they overcome difficult moments, and France passed that early examination.

England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia was another statement. Their attacking play was exciting and effective, though defensive lapses suggest there is still room for improvement. Nevertheless, starting with maximum points is exactly what every contender hopes to achieve.

Mexico complete the list. As one of the host nations, expectations are naturally high. Their 2-0 victory over South Africa may not have been the most spectacular performance of the opening round, but it was professional, organised and efficient. Such qualities are often invaluable in tournament football.

Of course, one match does not determine who will eventually lift the trophy. Football has repeatedly shown that teams can begin brilliantly and fade away, while others recover from poor starts to achieve greatness. Yet history also teaches that successful world cup campaigns are often built on solid beginnings.

The opening round has therefore sent a clear message. Germany, Argentina, France, England and Mexico have laid down an early marker. Whether they can sustain the momentum remains to be seen, but for now, they have given their rivals every reason to take notice.

As the tournament progresses, consistency rather than brilliance in one game will separate the genuine contenders from the pretenders. Matchday one has ended, but the race for football’s greatest prize is only just beginning.
