2022 finalists send early warning to rivals

The 2026 FIFA world cup is still in its infancy, yet two familiar names have already reminded the football world why they remain among the favourites. Four years after producing one of the greatest world cup finals in history, France and Argentina have begun another campaign with victories that send a strong message to their rivals.

France were first to make their statement. Les Bleus defeated Senegal 3-1 in a contest that was more competitive than the final score suggests. Senegal showed courage and resilience but eventually succumbed to the quality and experience of the former world champions. Once France found their rhythm, they demonstrated why they remain one of the most complete teams in international football.

Kylian Mbappe once again proved why he is regarded as one of the world’s finest footballers. His brace not only guided France to victory but also underlined his importance to a team seeking to reclaim the trophy they last won in 2018.

A few hours later, Argentina responded in emphatic fashion. The defending champions comfortably dispatched Algeria 3-0, producing a performance that combined composure, creativity and clinical finishing. If there were doubts about Argentina’s ability to defend their title, their opening display did little to justify them.

Lionel Messi, playing in what could be his final world cup, once again reminded football lovers that greatness does not diminish with age. His hat-trick was another chapter in an extraordinary international career, inspiring Argentina to an impressive start and reinforcing their status as genuine contenders.

Beyond the scorelines, however, lies a more significant message. Both teams displayed the qualities that define champions. They remained patient when required, capitalised on their opportunities and rarely looked overwhelmed by the occasion. That is the hallmark of experienced tournament sides.

History also favours them. Teams that begin the world cup with convincing victories often gather momentum as the tournament progresses. Confidence grows, belief spreads across the squad and opponents become increasingly wary.

Nevertheless, one must exercise caution. A strong opening match does not guarantee success. The world cup has repeatedly shown that early favourites can falter while less fancied nations rise unexpectedly. There are still many hurdles to overcome before either France or Argentina can dream of another appearance in the final.

Yet, if the opening round is anything to go by, the finalists of 2022 have wasted no time in announcing their intentions. France and Argentina are not in North America merely to participate; they have arrived to compete for football’s greatest prize once again.

The rest of the contenders have been placed on notice. The challenge now is whether they can rise to the standard already set by the two teams that contested the last world cup final.
