Schools in Ogbomoso Oyo state were deserted Wednesday morning as students did not come to school. This applies to both public and private schools across the five local government areas in the zone.

This is not unconnected with the anxiety over what happened Tuesday when a frightful alarm was raised that bandits had infiltrated the city and some neighbouring towns like Ajaawa.

Schools deserted by students

“We are in school but only a handful of students are around,” a teacher in one of the public secondary schools who spoke under the condition of anonymity told ogbomosoinsightonline.com. “This is as a result of what happened yesterday when there was pandemonium over attack by terrorists which happened to be unfounded. Parents and guardians invaded schools demanding to take away their children and wards. It was hectic.”
Many schools visited by our reporters this morning showed teachers in their numbers at their duty posts but students/pupils were no where to be seen. In a public secondary school only four students were seen.

“We are supposed to have CA test today and tomorrow but the students are not in school,” another teacher said.
Some students found in a school said they were “afraid of going to school because of the security situation,” adding they are around due to their WAEC exam. Those not in school said what they experienced yesterday was not palatable and for now they wont be resuming to school.
Ogbomoso Insight reports that bandits struck at three schools in Oriire local government area last Friday killing and kidnapping students/pupils and teachers. The abducted persons are still in captivity.

Also recall that the Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT Ogbomoso zone with the backing of the Oyo state leadership of the union asked the state government to close down schools in Ogbomoso axis to allow tension to cool. However, there has not been any reaction from government in that direction.
