Hepatitis remains one of the most silent but deadly health threats across Nigeria, and Ogbomoso is no exception. Since the last commemoration of World Hepatitis Day, Genesis Medical Diagnostics Centre, Ogbomoso, has been at the forefront of grassroots action, offering free Hepatitis screening to residents across the city and surrounding communities.

In the few months, over 3,500 citizens have been tested at no cost, making this one of the largest independent Hepatitis interventions in Ogbomoso. Shockingly, the results revealed that many citizens were completely unaware of their infection status, how the virus is contracted, or how it can be prevented.

Silent Infections, Hidden Risks

The screenings identified a high number of undiagnosed positive cases. Many of these individuals were healthy-looking and had no idea they carried the virus. Without this free programme, they would have continued spreading the infection unknowingly. The Centre’s intervention offered not only diagnosis, but also education on how to protect families and communities.

Ogbomoso Education Summit: Health Meets Learning

At the just-concluded Ogbomoso Education Summit 2025, an initiative by Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III, The Soun of Ogbomoso land, Genesis Medical Diagnostics Centre partnered with the summit committee to extend its campaign to educators, students, and civic leaders.

More than 500 participants were screened, and again, new positive cases were discovered on the spot. For many, it was the first time they were tested. The Centre provided counseling, linked positive individuals to further care, and educated attendees on preventive measures, including the crucial role of vaccination in breaking the cycle of infection.

The Vaccination Gap: A Community at Risk

While screening is essential, the fight against Hepatitis cannot end there. According to the World Health Organization, Hepatitis B is vaccine-preventable, yet vaccination uptake in many Nigerian communities remains dangerously low. In Ogbomoso, many of those tested admitted they had never received the vaccine or even heard of it.

Genesis Medical Diagnostics Centre has therefore raised an urgent call to action:

Government intervention to ensure affordable, accessible Hepatitis vaccines across Oyo State.

International partnerships to bring donor support, awareness campaigns, and subsidized vaccination drives to underserved communities.

Community mobilization through schools, faith groups, and local associations to encourage testing, vaccination, and safe health practices.

A Voice from the Centre

Speaking on the initiative, Olawuyi Victor Oyetayo, CEO/Lead Consults of Genesis Medical Diagnostics Centre, emphasized the importance of sustained action:

“We have seen the faces of Hepatitis in our community. It is not just a medical problem; it is a public health emergency. Screening is only the first step. Without vaccination, we are simply treating the surface while the roots spread underground. Government, global health agencies, and community leaders must rise together to vaccinate our people. Prevention is not optional it is survival.”

Building a Healthier Future

Genesis Medical Diagnostics Centre pledges to continue expanding its free and subsidized screening programmes, while actively seeking collaborations with government ministries, NGOs, and international partners. The Centre’s vision is clear: an Ogbomoso where no citizen is left ignorant of their Hepatitis status, and where every family has access to life-saving vaccines.

The Centre calls upon the Federal Ministry of Health, the Oyo State Government, and international health partners such as WHO, UNICEF, and GAVI to support large-scale vaccination programmes in Ogbomoso land. With joint efforts, the silent epidemic of Hepatitis can be halted before it claims more lives.
