Oyo public schools go on vacation after tumultuous 3rd term

Public schools in Oyo state have rounded off the 2025/2026 academic session, immediately starting the usual break traditionally tagged “long vacation.”
The session which commenced September 2025 with the first term, witnessed some disruptions in the third term (starting April) sequel to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers at three schools in Oriire local government area of Ogbomoso. some teachers were also killed by the perpetrators.

In solidarity, the national body of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) directed the Oyo state wing to embark on an industrial strike to identify with the victims, 47 in number, and pressure government to hasten their rescue.
The strike which the private schools partly joined (for six days) lasted 5 weeks. Shortly after the strike was called off, the remaining abductees were safely rescued. Thereafter a new academic calendar was released by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, with a new vacation date announced, August 14. It was formerly July 31.

In the last six weeks, primary six pupils sat for the entrance examination into JSS one; JSS 3 students wrote BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) to qualify them SS 1; while JSS one and two, SS one and two students sat for promotion examinations.
Some schools issued report sheets to their students/pupils. Meanwhile, schools will resume September 14, 2026 for a 2026/2027 academic session.
