Meanwhile, it is learnt that the building, which faces the school field, had been distressed and abandoned over time.
“We formerly used it as special unit block for the deaf students and one found use as a staff room,” a teacher of the school who however begged for anonymity said. “But it started to show signs of distress and so it was not used again. Later, iron scrap scavengers (jaribola) started to slice off the iron sheets in bits. For lack of funds the school couldn’t maintain the building. It has now totally collapsed.”
Recall early April more than ten schools were reported to have been affected by rainstorms which caused various degrees of blown roofs and collapsed walls. However, Oyo state government which owns the schools is yet to intervene by way of rehabilitation making resumption (on Monday April 27) herculean for the affected schools. There is even a particular school, Emmanuel Agboola Baptist Grammar School, whose hall has partly collapsed and the other side about to crumble as well. “So, there is fear as to where the school will sit its students for the upcoming external exams – WAEC and NECO, and a hall is imperative,” a concerned parent lamented.
