American Open University Nigeria has announced a one-week free AI-powered software development bootcamp targeted at residents of Ogbomoso, Oyo state, as part of efforts to equip young Nigerians with in-demand tech skills.
The institution disclosed that the training, which focuses on artificial intelligence and modern software development, will provide participants with hands-on experience in building real-world applications while leveraging AI tools to accelerate coding processes.
According to the organisers, the bootcamp will run through a hybrid format. From Monday to Wednesday, participants will undergo intensive virtual AI coding masterclasses, while Thursday and Friday sessions will focus on building functional applications. The programme will culminate in a one-day in-person event featuring live masterclasses, app refinement, and a grand pitch competition.
A major highlight of the initiative is the scholarship opportunity attached to the programme. The top three solutions presented during the pitch competition will earn winners a full Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) scholarship in Software Engineering or Information Technology at the university.
The pitch event is scheduled to take place at the First Floor, Adekitan Building, beside Ola Central Filling Station, High School Area, Ogbomoso.

Organisers noted that the programme is designed to prepare participants to become job-ready in today’s rapidly evolving technology ecosystem, whether they aim to work with established organisations or launch their own startups.
Speaking on the rationale behind the university’s consistent provision of free training and educational opportunities, the founder, Professor Seyi Akanbi, said the initiative is driven by a commitment to bridge the widening skills gap among Nigerian youths.
He noted that access to quality education, particularly in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, should not be limited by financial constraints.
“We believe talent is universal, but opportunities are not. Our goal is to democratise access to tech education and give young people the tools they need to compete globally,” he said.
Professor Akanbi added that the university’s approach focuses on practical, project-based learning that equips participants with real-world skills rather than just theoretical knowledge.

“By making these programmes free, we are investing in the future of our society. When young people are empowered with relevant skills, they become job creators, innovators, and contributors to national development,” he added.
He further encouraged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity, noting that the institution remains committed to providing platforms that nurture innovation and excellence in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
Interested participants are encouraged to register for free via the official university channels. Further enquiries can be made through info@aouniversity.edu.ng, the website www.aouniversity.edu.ng, or the contact numbers provided by the organisers.
The initiative underscores the growing importance of AI-driven skills in Nigeria’s digital economy, with institutions increasingly stepping in to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry demands.
