Old students associations in public secondary schools in Oyo state have been called upon to allow relevant authorities do their work in appointment of principals.

The Permanent Secretary/Inspector General of Education Ogbomoso zone 1, Dr Dele Oyedokun, made the admonition Saturday while speaking at the 40th graduation anniversary of the 1985 set of Ogbomoso Baptist High School (OBHS), Ogbomoso, Oyo state, held in the school hall.

Recall alumni associations in many schools now insist on an old student in the teaching service being appointed principal. This has been igniting crises as the age-long consideration for seniority in the service is now being sacrificed in order to accommodate this demand by the alumni aside other challenges.

But speaking at the event on Saturday Dr. Oyedokun commending the OBHS Old Students’ Association (OBHSOSA) for its contributions counseled that the insistence on appointment of old students as principals should be jettisoned.

He urged passionately that the authorities saddled with the appointment of principals should rather be allowed to do its work fairly.

Oyedokun noted that this would make room for the appointment of the best hands to manage schools at a point in time pointing out that many old students appointed principals in the end are often found wanting competence-wise.

He therefore urged old students against constituting themselves into competitors against government in schools but to be productive partners in progress.

“You are one of those fulfilling the expectation of the Oyo state government on its policy on education, by partnering with government,” Oyedokun said while lauding the effort of OBHSOSA.

“So, l want to commend you for complimenting government’s efforts in improving the standards of education. But l want to charge you against competing with government in the running of the school.

“Also, l want to encourage you, don’t insist on appointment of an old student as the principal. Let’s give you the best hand. Those alumni you insisted on to be principals we have found out have always disappointed. So, allow us to always do our work in the best way. We will give the best.”

Dr Oyedokun emphasized that the present administration in the state under Governor Seyi Makinde is committed to raising the bar of education underscored by the increasing budgetary allocations for education since coming on board calling on the alumni and other stakeholders to continue to compliment government’s effort.

“The Oyo state government under Engr Seyi Makinde has been doing commendably well in education. The administration is ensuring increase in budgetary allocations for education, from 7% to 25 %. This is impressive.”
