The Labour movement in Oyo state has expressed appreciation to Oyo state governor Engr. Seyi Makinde over what it termed his commitment to the welfare of workers.
The labour movement consisting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC) in a letter extends its “profound appreciation” for the “unwavering commitment” of the governor to the “welfare of workers in Oyo State.”
ogbomosoinsightonline.com recalls that on Saturday during the World Teachers Day celebration in Ibadan, Governor Makinde reaffirmed his resolve to implement the N70, 000 minimum wage signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on July 29, while assuring that negotiations would commence this week.

It’s also recalled that since October 2023, the state government began the payment of N25,000 wage awards to workers and N15,000 to pensioners to cushion the effects of the hike in prices occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.
The Saturday’s reassurance was thus an elixir for excitement for workers though the governor did not clarify if arrears would be paid.
“The Labour movement commend the Governor for the wage award approval and prompt implementation since October, 2023 for both Workers and Pensioners in the State,” it is stated in the letter, signed by Comrades Martins Kayode, Olanipekun Seun and Bosun Olabiyi.

“The movement also wish to use this medium to specially thank His Excellency for his commitment to the implementation of the approved N-70,000.00 National New Minimum Wage in Oyo State. This is an attestation of your genuine and undiluted interest in the welfare of workers in the State.”

While assuring the governor, who is generally regarded as pro-workers, of its “continued commitment to harmonious Labour/Government relationship in the State,” the labour movement, stressed, “Conclusively, we want to also use this medium to affirm our commitment toward concluding the minimum wage negotiation in the next two weeks as stated by your Excellency Sir.”
