After more than two years the process to fill the vacant position of the Balogun of Ogbomosoland is set to commence.
This is sequel to the official declaration of the position vacant by Ogbomoso North local government chairman, Hon George Ogunlade, contained in a public notice signed on his behalf by the director of admin and general services, Mrs..O.O. Faderanmi.

The last Balogun, High Chief Shittu Fasina, died early 2022 making the position to be vacant since then
The demise of High Chief Fasina occured at a time the Soun throne was also vacant following the transition of Oba Jimoh Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III on December 12, 2021. The reigning Soun Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III was installed on September 8, 2023, and being the consenting authority the approval of the nominee will have to be granted by him.

The public notice, titled, “Declaration of Balogun Chieftaincy in Ogbomoso North local government area of Oyo state vacant,” states, “Sequel to the demise of the occupant of Balogun Chieftaincy, late Alhaji Chief Shittu Fasina, Balogun of Ogbomosoland, the general public and particularly the concerned members of Balogun of Ogbomosoland Chieftaincy are hereby notified that the stool has been declared vacant for fourteen (14) days from today, Monday, 12th August, 2024, in accordance with section 15, Cap 28, Chiefs Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria (2000).”

It is noted the selection process would begin immediately after the expiration of the 14 day notice, which would be August 26.
The Balogun is one of the Ilu Chiefs and a kingmaker. Other kingmakers in order of hierarchy are Areago (head), Jagun, Bara, Ikolaba and Abese. Balogun is the sixth and is the only position that’s currently unoccupied.
Among the contestants to the position, ogbomosoinsightonline.com learnt, is Dr. Saka Balogun, an octogenarian and a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
