LAUTECH ASUU appeals to Makinde over implementation of FG/ASUU agreement, warns of imminent unrest

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso branch, has appealed to the Oyo state government to forthwith commence the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU renegotiated agreement, which LAUTECH is yet to implement.

This was disclosed to ogbomosoinsightonline.com by the LAUTECH ASUU branch chairman, Prof . Olujimi Dada, Thursday during a chat over the matter.

Recall that a press conference by ASUU, Ibadan Zone, Tuesday, called on the governors of Oyo and Kwara states Seyi Makinde and Abdulrahaman Abdulrazaq respectively, to begin full implementation of the signed 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement from July, warning that failure to implement the agreement may result to disruption of academic activities in the institutions.

The institutions affected are LAUTECH, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUE), Oyo and Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete. The union noted that the non-implementation by the two states “put the lives of their members in danger of meeting their personal, and daily needs under the excruciating Nigerian economy.”

While appealing to the governors of Oyo and Kwara states, the coordinator of the Ibadan Zone of ASUU, Prof Biodun Olaniran, emphasized that “full mobilization for a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike” would be embarked upon,” if the agreement is not implemented in the states.

The Ibadan Zone of ASUU covers universities in Oyo, Osun and Kwara states but while the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin and Osun State University have begun the implementation those mentioned are yet to.

Speaking with Ogbomoso Insight, Prof Jimi Dada, who expressed sympathy over the abduction in schools in Oriire local government and prayed for the safe return of the captives as he praised the efforts of the Oyo state government towards securing their release, asserted that the looming strike was real.

Olujimi said it had become inevitable in view of the non-implementation of the agreement reached in 2025 and negotiated for over ten years, affirming that despite different efforts by the branch the agreement is not yet implemented at LAUTECH.

The ASUU branch chairman regretted that while some neighbouring states had commenced the implementation Oyo state has not, appealing to Governor Makinde to facilitate the process.

He explained the union had met with the Governing Council of the university and the management but that they cited fund insufficiency as reason for its non-implementation.

“We address the Oyo State Government on the implementation of the 2025 FG/ASUU Renegotiated Agreement at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. The Federal Government released the implementation circular on 14th January, 2026. We note with appreciation that sister state universities such as Osun State University in Osun, Olabisi Onabanjo University Ago Iwoye in Ogun State, and Ekiti State University in Ekiti State (all in the South West) have since commenced payment of Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) reviewed upward by 40 percent. Consolidated Academic Tools Allowances (CATA), Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and Professorial Allowances (PA).”

He remarked it was confounding that Oyo state which used to be ahead in implementation of such policies because of the value placed on education, is yet to implement the agreement.

“Historical antecedents have always placed Oyo State as the first among equals in education and development, Oyo State has always been a model for others. We therefore appeal to the government to extend the same gesture of goodwill to the academic community of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso by commencing full implementation of the agreement.”

He disclosed their past efforts, “Prior to the signing of the agreement and even since the agreement was signed, since January 2026, ASUU LAUTECH has reached out through letters and requests for audience with His Excellency the Governor, the University Council, and the University Administration. When the leadership of the Union met with the Governing Council and the University Administration, the Council agreed and subsequently approved the implementation of the agreement subject to availability of fund from Oyo State Government, but as we speak, we are yet to have the opportunity to meet with His Excellency, the executive governor of Oyo State.”

He further stressed that the non-implementation of the agreement had exposed their members to various untoward happenings such as difficulties in meeting basic daily needs including meals and medical treatment, transportation to campus due to fuel costs, payment of children’s school fees and house rent leading to harassment etc.

He now revealed that the university may lose several good hands to other universities especially where their lecturers are already enjoying the reviewed wages, expressing concern that this in the long run might affect LAUTECH’s rating as the best state university in Nigeria and as one of the best overall.

“We therefore appeal to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde (a leader widely known for his commitment to purposeful education), to consider the following requests,” Prof Olujimi Dada pleaded.

Specifically, he wants Governor Makinde “to please consider the immediate full implementation of the salary structure and other components of the agreement, with arrears from January 2026,” asserting that is the only panacea to the impending academic disruption.

This is as he appealed to traditional and religious leaders, parents, civil societies, and other stakeholders to intervene.

Prof Dada concluded by saying, “Oyo State has earned respect as a “Pacesetter” because of investments in people and institutions. By attending to the welfare of her university lecturers, the government will further strengthen the foundation of education in the state.”
