Soun stool: Another victory

The conclusion of deliberation at the plenary session of the Oyo State House of Assembly Tuesday on the structure of the contentious issue of chairmanship of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs towards reviltalizating the esteemed body making provision for rotational chairmanship among the trio of the Soun of Ogbomoso, the Alaafin of Oyo and Olubadan of Ibadan signals another (small) victory for the throne of Soun. It revalidates its prominence.
The House of Assembly had to bow to pressure to take a decision that reflected the general opinion of the people of the state, and this it is believed would be assented to by the state governor Engr Seyi Makinde.
The arrangement, a re-affirmation of the 2011 provision, further confirms the eminent position of the Soun. There is no doubt, the Soun stool is a stool beloved of the Creator and destined for undiminished greatness. From inception it has always been swaying from glory to glory ignited by deeds of valour. Paternally, it had no consanguinity with the mystical great Oduduwa or Ile – Ife. But the stool has surpassed many with attachments to the mythical land of creation and is unrelenting in making beautiful history.

Founded by a hunter, Soun Ogunlola, the stool has shown repeatedly that it is made for victory, always transcending the extraordinary. It has faced existential threats several times but it always overcomes. Its history is replete with swarms of competent princes and traditional heads borne by the overriding interests of their communities. They are usually nation builders who have uncanny ability to ferret out and bring close, men of ability. Bravery is likewise a feature of the men that sit on the stool. They are often redoubtable warlords who master the art of war and victory. They are often calm, composed and calculative, with knack for making decisive moves that will turn the tides at crucial moments. This was demonstrated again in the resuscitated battle of the chairmanship structure of the Oyo Council of Obas. Ibadan had come out boldly to challenge the House of Assembly on its initial proposal to make the Alaafin the presiding and permanent chairman. But the fate of the Alaafin was sealed when the Soun throne through its Mogajis (heads of the five recognised ruling houses) spoke with incredible articulation, reeling out irrefutable historical and contemporary evidences to back up their demands. It has one unassailable effect, it instantly provoked disorientation in the other camp (s). The argument by the Soun became the game changer. Though this is not to discountenance other factors and interests that came to play. But the Souns played their role, their contention that “the power and authorities Oyo wielded were buried at Oyo Katunga,” was a jolt, l have not read or heard the argument being contended with conviction. It clearly points out the glory of old Oyo could not solely be the basis for today’s decision, it could only be respected.
The immediate past Soun late Oba (Dr) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III JP CON CFR, daring all the powers that be in Yorubaland including the great Obas and Chiefs and the military authorities, adorned the beaded crown at his coronation in 1974. That contributed to securing elevation for the stool in 1976, it was inevitable, a privilege also benefited by the Olubadan stool. Many acts of bravery mark the stool and backed by a population of equally men of valour and substance which fights incredibly to win when it decides to fight, the ascendancy will continue.

The present occupier of the stool His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III has not disappointed too. Under him the honour did not slip. His deft moves, good relationships with relevant persons and articulation made the present victory a reality. It’s vintage him!
This victory is heart-thumping, it gives goose pimples.
