To announce that the Islamic festival, Eid-el-Kabir will be celebrated in Ogbomoso tomorrow like in many other cities around world, the traditional nine-gunfire by Oluode of Ogbomoso and his men had just taken place in the Ogbomoso palace at Oja’gbo.
It’s a tradition that has subsisted for a very long time and is also performed to herald the Eid-el- fitri festival.
The gunshots according to the Personal Secretary of Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III JP, CON, CFR, Mr. Toyin Ajamu, is a symbolic gesture that officially announces the celebration of Sallah festival in the city.
It signifies that prayer will be held at the Muslim praying ground along Iresaapa road the next day and in other designated places.
The Muslim community is in a joyous mood even as rams and other animals were transported within the city all day in preparation for the biggest Muslim festival tomorrow.
Eid-el-Kabir is a festival that “honours the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to God’s command.”
It is one of the two major festivals in Islam the other being Eid-el-Fitri.
