Tragic accident leaves 19 dead on Oyo-Ogbomoso road

The usual disregard for traffic regulations by Nigerian drivers has precipitated the tragic death of nineteen persons on the Ogbomoso – Oyo new highway at kilometre 3, Sabo, Oyo. It left only one survivor who is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Oyo.

The road carnage which occured Sunday morning involved two vehicles, a white Toyota HIACE 18-seater bus with registration number NTT 522 ZY and a black Toyota salon car.
The bus said to be heading to Sokoto was on the wrong lane at a top speed when it collided with the salon car coming in the opposite direction, an eyewitness told ogbomosoinsightonline.com.

“The impact was devastating,” the eyewitness who did not reveal his name said. “The two drivers and 17 passengers died on the spot while the only survivor was taken to a hospital.”
The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Joshua Adekanye, blamed the accident on disregard for the traffic law.
Adekanye disclosed, “the incident involved a Sokoto bound commercial bus and Corolla salon car. It happened at 7:45 am at Kilometre 3, Sabo area along Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway.

“Out of the 20 passengers on board the two affected vehicles, 19 died on the spot while the survivor is receiving medical attention at a neighbourhood hospital.
“The corpses of the victims have been deposited at the General Hospital Oyo.

“The drivers of the two vehicles were among the victims who died on the spot.
“The deceased driver of the Toyota HIACE was on the wrong lane and collided with the Toyota Corolla salon car.”

The sector Commander consequently urged road users to always adhere to the traffic rules to avert such carnage.
