15 things to know about new institution approved by FG for Ogbomoso and 3 other cities

News of the establishment of a new higher institution in Nigeria by the Federal Government has elicited joy especially in a city like Ogbomoso that is not adequately captured in the Federal Government’s allocation of projects. As the new reality dawns ogbomosoinsightonline.com publishes here, fifteen facts or preliminary things to know about the new institute.
1. The full name of the institute is Nigerian Academy of Cultural Studies; its acronym is NACUS.
2. It will begin academic activities in September 2025 at its four pilot campuses to be located at Ogbomoso, Calabar, Lagos and Abuja. Thus, we will have Nigerian Academy of Cultural Studies, Ogbomoso Campus etc.
3. The new institution used to be a training school of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), which is under the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy. It’s therefore a brainchild of NICO. ogbomosoinsightonline.com recalls the proposal for the institution was first made public in May 2024 without though naming the location of the campuses.
4. NACUS, now a full-fledged institution, is a specialised monothecnic focused on cultural education and training, and dedicated to reviving and institutionalizing cultural knowledge in Nigeria.
5. Specifically, its aims include instilling cultural pride and identity through structured academic and professional training, challenging and overcoming cultural erosion etc.
6. Its curriculum and programmes/courses have been approved by the National Board of Technical Education (NBTE), the body responsible for accreditation of courses towards award of (Higher) National Diplomas.
7. It’s also already registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

8. Courses/programmes students can apply for include Cultural Administration Resource Management, Cultural Technology and Cultural Pharmacology. Graduates will be able to bag National Diploma certificates.
9. Cultural Technology (one of the courses available mentioned above) is aimed at harnessing the country’s abundant natural resources through indigenous technology for practical use. In the same way, the Pharmacology programme aims at exploring and developing Nigeria’s rich botanical resources into medicinal capsules and tablets; this will come with the establishment of botanical gardens to grow varieties of herbal plants for researches.

11. Its Postgraduate Diploma Programme is affiliated with the Nasarawa State University.
12. Graduates can get employment, nationally and internationally. They can serve as cultural officers in Nigerian embassies around the world, in the Ministry of Arts and Culture (at state and federal levels) as civil servants, can be employed at health centres, research centres etc and they can be self-reliant. The opportunities are limitless.
13. Aside fresh secondary school leavers, other categories of people that can apply for admission include cultural officers, theatre practitioners, hospitality workers, filmmakers and foreign students interested in Nigerian culture.
14. As a way of support for the Ogbomoso Campus, the Soun of Ogbomosoland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III, has donated facilities (location yet to be made public though) to serve as temporary site for the seamless takeoff of the institution.
15. Recall the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, was represented during the maiden Ogbomoso Cradle Carnival last December. It’s heart thumping Ogbomoso got recognition as a centre of culture.
