Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari having been suspended as commander of Intelligence Response Team (IRT), a unit under the Inspector General of Police (IGP-IRT) sequel to his being linked to fraudulent practices by a Nigerian serial internet fraudster, Ramon Abass alias Hushpuppi, in the United States of America and his extradition being demanded by the US government, a replacement, Mr. Tunji Disu, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been announced.
Now, who is Tunji Disu, described as a consummate officer?
Disu was born in Lagos Island in the 1960s. He had his post-primary education at Mayflower Junior School, Ikenne, Ogun State; attended Pobuna Secondary Grammar School, Epe; and Saint Gregory’s College, Lagos.
He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English at the Lagos State University; post-graduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies at Lagos State University; a Certificate in Personal Protection in the United Kingdom; and has Master in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Ondo State.
Career
Disu joined the Nigerian Police in 1992 as Cadet ASP and was trained at the Nigeria Police Academy, Kaduna. He has served as DPO in various divisions and states, just as he was once an ADC to the then Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Afterwards, he was posted to Ogun State Police Command as the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in-charge of Ago-Iwoye.
From there, he was deployed to Sudan where he led the Nigeria Police contingent on African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) to quell the crisis in the war-torn Darfur in 2005.
Upon return to Nigeria, he was the officer in-charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ondo State Police Command Headquarters and subsequently, officer in-charge of the SARS, Oyo and Rivers States Police Command Headquarters.
Soon afterwards, he was elevated to a new rank as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and he was at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Rivers State Police Command before his transfer to Lagos State Command and subsequent deployment as the commander in-charge of RRS.
At RRS, he demonstrated competence, which translated into bursting of several cases, not limited to kidnaping, armed robbery and fraud.
He had attended several professional courses both at home and abroad: Small Arms Smuggling Training in Botswana, Internet Fraud Training at the Cambridge University, UK, Strategic Leadership Command Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, Forensic Investigations and Criminal Intelligence Course at the University of Lagos, amongst others.
He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations and Chattered Institute of Personnel management, amongst other professional bodies.
Recalling his time as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad of the Police in Lagos , a commentator writes, “Whoever recalls the days of DCP Tunji Disu as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad of the Police in Lagos would agree that the Force has made a good choice as replacement for Mr. Abba Kyari.
“Disu was that officer who would move from one end of Lagos to another late in the evening, helped those whose vehicles broke down to push and still pursue criminals to their den.
“His type makes policing attractive and I do hope that the new Head of the IG Intelligence Response Team will let the world know that it is not all rot within the belly of the NPF. Congratulations TD!”
