‘Good to have people like Prof Adelowo, we appeal for rheumatology centre in Ogbomoso’

The news of the feats of Professor Adelowo Olufemi Oladipo, an Ogbomoso-born medical professional, who is the first rheumatologist in West Africa, and founder of several rheumatology centres across Nigeria, excited some senior citizens especially in the city, while calling on him to facilitate establishment of a rheumatology centre in Ogbomoso as well.

“Quite good to have people like Prof. Adelowo in Ogbomoso,” The Very Rev’d Emmanuel Ogundiji, noted in a message to ogbomosoinsightonline.com.
According to Wikipedia, “Rheumatology (from Greek ῥεῦμα (rheûma) ‘flowing current’) is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and management of disorders whose common feature is inflammation in the bones, muscles, joints, and internal organs.”

It adds, ‘Rheumatology covers more than 100 different complex diseases, collectively known as rheumatic diseases, which includes many forms of arthritis as well as lupus and Sjögren’s syndrome.[1] Doctors who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists.”
The rheumatologist “specializes in the field of medical sub-specialty called rheumatology. A rheumatologist holds a board certification after specialized training.”
Prof Oladipupo was recently celebrated by Ogbomoso Pivotal Club, a Lagos-based club of Ogbomoso patriotic indigenes with many past positive interventions in their homeland.
The club called on the federal government to confer a national honour on him in recognition of his numerous achievements and contributions to the field of rheumatology in Nigeria and beyond underscored by the several international awards he had garnered.
“Professor Adelowo is a shining light, and we are proud to be associated with him. We will continue to celebrate him and others who are making Ogbomoso and Nigeria proud in their careers and service to both the nation and the international community,” noted Mr. Joel Owoade, president of Ogbomoso Pivotal Club.
The club presented Prof. Adelowo with a special award in recognition of his achievements and as an inspiration to younger generations to follow in his footsteps.
Also enthused by the news Mrs. Adebayo, wrote in a message to Ogbomoso Insight, “It is nice to read about how Ogbomoso Pivotal Club celebrated our Daddy – Prof Adelowo’s global achievement, may the Lord continue to bless every member of the club.

“I read about how Daddy established rheumatology clinics at some University Teaching Hospitals like Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, LUTH to mention but few. I am one of his patients at his Arthrimed Specialist Clinic – (The Arthritis Centre) 2, Rev. Ogunbiyi Street, Off Oba Akinjobi Way G R.A. Ikeja Lagos when my child that took me to the Centre was in Lagos. Now I cannot go to the Centre on my own.
“We have many Arthritis Patients in Ogbomoso that are suffering. Show this my note to the Pivotal Club please, I appeal, to help tell Prof Adelowo to come and establish a rheumatology clinic at The Lautech Teaching Hospital Ogbomoso and arrange for how rheumatologists will be posted to the Hospital.
