Fatal crash leaves casualties on old Ogbomoso – Oyo road

A fatal accident Friday afternoon has left an unspecified number of persons dead and several others injured.
The crash which occurred on the old Ogbomoso – Oyo road between Elega and Oolo, near Ogbomoso, was as a result of an head-on collission involving an articulated vehicle and a Sharon Bus heading towards Oyo.

According to another traveller, who arrived the scene moments after the accident happened, “the bus, from what we saw was going towards Oyo because shortly before our bus arrived the scene, we saw a trailer with damaged front side and trying to stop. It was like the bus overtook another vehicle, and came face-to-face with the oncoming trailer resulting in the head-on collission. One person was clearly dead as he was covered with clothes beside the vehicle even as the rescue operation continued. We saw only one person performing the operation perhaps he was also in the bus. But the sight didn’t appear good.”

The source who preferred anonymity added, “It was when we were about entering Ogbomoso that we saw operatives of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Ogbomoso unit heading out believably to the scene.”

The road is a death trap with several appeals made to the federal government in the past for the completion of the four-lane express road under construction from Ibadan traversing Oyo and Ogbomoso to Ilorin, which started in 2001. But the pleas have gone unheard leaving users of the road at the mercy of the badly damaged old road.

Many thought with another Yoruba man as president (having been awarded by former President Olusegun Obasanjo) the road will get attention and be completed but sadly since President Bola Tinubu’s coming in May 2023, the road, ongoing before his assumption of office, was abandoned again early this year though less than ten kilometres to completion.
