The family of late Brigadier Benjamin Adesanya Maja Adekunle has announced plans for the 10th anniversary of his passing.

The series of memorial events to commemorate the distinguished soldier’s death was contained in a statement made available to Ogbomoso Insight.

The renowned Brig. Adekunle, popularly known as Black Scorpion, signaled his bravery at the start of Nigeria’s Civil War (1967 – 1970) when he led a sea-borne invasion of the Delta and riverine areas in today’s South-south which resulted in the reclaiming of the important area for Nigeria and became a beachhead for the federal troop to win the war; the late Adekunle also efficiently de-congested the Nigerian Ports during the cement armada after the Civil War.

The main events slated for Ogbomoso, Oyo state, the hometown of the late general, a town dear to him, which is a reflection of the deep respect he had for the city and its people, will begin on Saturday, September 14, with the 10th Memorial Golf Kitty, to be held at the Ogbomoso Recreation Club.

The second day, Sunday, September 15, a thanksgiving service will be held at St. David’s Anglican Cathedral, starting 10:00am.

On Tuesday, September 17, a charitable initiative will see the empowerment of the vulnerable including 50 widows, 50 school children, and others at the palace of His Imperial Majesty, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye.

The main highlight of the memorial will be the inaugural Benjamin Adekunle Memorial Leadership Lecture, themed, “The Ogbomosos, military gallantry and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” on Wednesday, September 18, from 9:30am at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) auditorium. Guest speakers will include Rear Admiral Jacob Ajani (Rtd), Dr. Olayinka Oyegbile, and Professor Omotoye Olorode.

The event will conclude with a novelty football match between Black Scorpion FC and Valiant FC at Soun Stadium, to kick off at 4:45pm.
