AMGS Ogbomoso alumnus, Prof Oyelami, to deliver Bowen Varsity’s 18th inaugural lecture

Professor Olufemi Moses Oyelami is to deliver the 18th Inaugural Lecture of the Bowen University, Iwo, Osun state.
The event is scheduled to come up on Thursday, January 30, at the Red Hall, College of Health Sciences, starting at 2pm, to be hosted by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Jonathan Oyebamiji Babalola.
The erudite scholar will be talking on the topic, “Form and spirit: Software as the life force of digital devices.”
Probed on the topic by ogbomosoinsightonline.com, Prof Oyelami notes in a statement, “The emphasis of the topic is that without software, digital devices are mere hardware. That is, it highlights that software is the lifeblood of digital devices, rendering them functional. The lecture shares my research contributions in Mobile Computing, Algorithm Development, and related areas.”
He adds, “Our findings demonstrate that spoken dialogue systems can bridge the digital divide in developing countries, providing remote access to services, particularly for the unreached, less literate, and visually impaired. Their usability studies affirm these systems’ potential utility and acceptance, though their adoption by Nigerian governments remains limited.

“In Algorithm Development, we’ve enhanced sorting efficiency by refining existing methods and developing new algorithms inspired by older ones. In other areas, research highlights include:
- Developing e-Learning bulletin boards using Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).
- Using Chatbots to preserve endangered Nigerian mother tongues.
- Enhancing ATM security with biometric features like fingerprints.
- Nigerians’ awareness and use of online health information for self-care.
- Cost-effectiveness of the single-structure In-Memory technique for healthcare big data storage.
- Improved diabetes prediction accuracy through pre-processing in data science.
- Context-sensitive navigation aids via map and audio systems for unfamiliar environments.
- Applying novel decision-making methods from the Ayo game to other strategic domains.”
Profile of Prof Oyelami
Professor Oyelami who hails from Ogbomoso attended Ayoka Memorial Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and Ijeru Baptist Primary School, both in Ogbomoso, before proceeding to Adeniran Memorial Grammar School (AMGS), also in Ogbomoso, passing out in 1986. He went on to attend St. Andrew’s College of Education (now Emmanuel Alayande University of Education), Oyo, obtaining an NCE in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1992. He also bagged B.Sc. in Computer from University of Ilorin (1998), M.Sc. in Computer Science from University of Ibadan in 2004 and a Ph.D in Computer Science from Covenant University in 2012.
After obtaining cognate experience in blue chip companies including NISSCO Oil Field Engineers (a subsidiary of Bouygues Offshore, France) in Lagos, Saipem Nigeria Limited (a subsidiary of Eni oil industry company, Italy), he followed his heart which is academic, thus he joined Covenant University, Ota, Ogun state to pursue an academic career and in 2016, he joined the services of Bowen University. He rose through the ranks to become a Professor on January 1, 2021.

Prof Oyelami has served meritoriously in different capacities in the institution such as Acting Head of Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, Acting Provost of the College of Computing and Communication Studies, Vice-Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, and is the incumbent Provost, College of Computing and Communication Studies. He is also a valuable contributor in the ranking exercise of Times Higher Education Sub-Sahara Universities Ranking.
He has several publications in reputable journals and has presented papers in local and international conferences.
Oyelami is a recipient of a number of research/travel grants such as South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists Travel Award to The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 2009 and Bowen University Research Grant 2021.
He has been involved in review of and has contributed to several books including chapters in the book, “Cases on Successful E-Learning Practices in the Developed and Developing World: Methods for the Information Economy” edited by Professor Bolanle A. Olaniran of the Department of Communication Studies, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, USA; chapters in “Handbook of Research on Sustainable ICT Adoption and Integration for Socio-Economic Development” by IGI; International Journal of E-Health and Medical Communications (IJEHMC). An IGI journal; South African Computer Journal; International Journal of E-Services and Mobile Applications (IJESMA); International Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences (IJMMS).
British Journal of Mathematics and Computer Science; Ilorin Journal of Computer Science & Information Technology; and several AICTTRA conferences by Obafemi Awolowo University and conferences organized by Covenant University.
Prof Oyelami’s contributions to the expansion of university education in Nigeria is humongous, that putting them together will occupy volumes and pages.
