Anxiety as 6 worshipers die, several in critical condition after eating ‘ipese’ in church

Six worshipers have been reported dead after consuming specially prepared food known as ‘ipese’ during a feast in a church, a white-garment church at Iyana-Cele, NNPC, Apata in Ibadan, Oyo state capital. Several others are still receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo area, while more than fifty have been discharged.
According to findings by ogbomosoinsightonline.com, the incident happened Sunday, September 22, during service.

However a source in the church claimed it is not medically confirmed yet whether the disaster is connected with the meal – ipese usually beans with coconut.

“I ate the prepared beans like every other member, including the victims and nothing happened to me,” the source said. “So, it is not about the ipese as being widely claimed.”

The source added that various organs of government, like the police, Department of State Services, (DSS), World Health Organisation (WHO) have visited the church to investigate the matter. “But no official statement has yet been made,” he noted.
Meanwhile, it is stated that the head pastor is attending to visitors, however, Ogbomoso Insight could not meet him during the visit.

Also, a senior medical worker at IDC Olodo, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident.
He said 50 of the victims that were rushed to the IDC had been treated and discharged as at Saturday.
According to him, “Some of the affected persons were brought to the centre for treatment. But as of today, Saturday, 50 of them have been discharged while others are still on admission.
While confirming the matter to newsmen, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, said police was still conducting investigation on the matter.
