EDITORIAL: Bad road: BUTH, Seminary, Antioch, GTB, come through for us, make it community service

We make this appeal to the managements of Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Antioch Baptist Church, the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary (NBTS) and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) Ogbomoso, to undertake the repairs of the road that passes through the four vital institutions along the major trunk A road that links the western and northern parts of the country. The road stretch being referred to is not up to 200 kilometres but badly riddled with huge craters. Its bad condition has made it virtually impassable causing traffic gridlocks of trailers (articulated vehicles). Trailers often stretch kilometres held up because of the caved portions bringing lots of inconveniences to other commuters.

Since government has refused to do the needful in repairing the road we appeal to these institutions to step in by way of effecting repairs as a form of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Defined, Google describes Corporate Social (Service) Responsibility as “a management concept that describes how a company contributes to the well-being of communities and society through environmental and social measures.” Three of the institutions mentioned might be religious-based, and not all out to make profits but they still form an important interface with the people, with some little profits trickling in. GTB on the other hand is a full-blown business outfit and will be appreciated if they make such significant contributions. Undertaking the repairs will further be a boost to the reputation of each of them no doubt.

In another dimension, the foursome constitute some of the most affected sectors of the society because their “businesses” are hampered one way or the other. As an instance, since about few weeks ago when the road became blocked, how do people access them? Those in emergency health situation how do they gain entry and so on? It definitely inflicts each of them with huge revenue losses. We all know government is never either sensitive or responsive to such emergencies. Thus, we make strong appeal to the four institutions to come through for us.
