Hon Olufemi Oladokun Onireti, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ogbomoso North/Ogbomoso South/Oriire federal constituency in the forthcoming 2023 general elections, has warned students against persisting in social vices especially gambling if they would be accomplished leaders in the future.

Mr Olawoyin Idrees, who represented Femi Onireti

Hon Onireti gave this warning Tuesday at the 2022 valedictory service of Owode Community Grammar School (Owode Grams), Ogbomoso.

Onireti, chairman of the occasion, and represented by Mr. Olawoyin Idrees, expressed worry over what he described as the degeneration of values among the youths nowadays which he noted is worsened by the advent of digital gadgets.

The chairman of Dohertis Global Resources Limited while congratulating the graduands had said, “The graduating students should see themselves as leaders of tomorrow.

“But this will not happen unless you work for it. My advice to you therefore is to avoid what l call gambling. The rate at which our youths take to gambling is frightening.

“Hardly will you go to any school without you seeing students gambling.

“The leaders you see today were not trained that way. You have to be responsible, you have to excell in your academics and eschew social vices. Ask them who is the president of the country and many won’t know. But ask them who is Portable? They will jump in chorusing his song.”

Lamenting the situation he asked rhetorically, “Where are we going?” And added, “All these vices are contributing negatively to our youths. The money being spent on them many of them are allowing to go to waste. They get money from their parents and take it to engage in betting.”

He further asked, “How did we get here? We are in the digital age. Hardly will you see any youth here without digital gadgets but check the gadgets, you will be surprised at what they are watching on their gadgets, all kinds of nonsensical things.” Very uncomfortable with the degeneration and loss of values among the youths he stressed further, “How did we get here? These are leaders of tomorrow. Is this how we will continue?”

The floater of Femi Onireti Quiz Competition consequently urged teachers and other stakeholders in the educational sector to address the problem urgently positing, “So, we have to catch them young, let them know this is not the right channel to go. That if truly they want to be leaders of tomorrow, they need to avoid all these social vices.

“Since we can’t bar them from using these gadgets, how do we then align them to use these gadgets positively. That means the ball is in the court of our teachers here present, the principal, the educationists here present and everybody. We have a lot to do. We need to make them understand we are in the digital age, they should harness the gadgets rather positively, to solving problems.”

He repeated passionately, “Please and please, I want you to avoid gambling, I still repeat it, it is not good for your future.”

He concluded his speech with a poser that encourages the students to be creators rather than being spectators or backbiters “I want to leave you with this short message my dear graduands – will you be part of those that make things happen, those that watch things happen or those that ask how things happened? You need to choose where you want to belong.”
