21 yr-old cashew nut thief apprehended at Onipaanu, Ogbomoso

A 21 year-old boy was this afternoon apprehended at Alaja village near Onipaanu, along Ogbomoso-Iresapa road in Surulere local government area of Oyo state, while picking fallen cashew nuts from a farm.
The boy identified as Yusuf Rasak from Arowomole area, Ogbomoso, a bricklayer apprehentice, was caught while attempting to escape after being discovered.
He fled but was eventually caught by the villagers who subjected him to beating.
A villager who spoke with ogbomosoinsightonline.com said theft of cashew nuts had become rampant in the area noting that it was a good development that the young thief was caught.
The man added, “The boy had been suspected in the past but ran away as people sighted him that day.
“Some of us rely on cashew nuts for our survival this time when the economy of the country is in shambles. We invested in its production and maintenance, it is an act of economic sabotage for some people to cart the nuts away.”
The boy meanwhile said he engaged in the act to get money to feed himself, “l planned to use the money obtained from the sales of the nuts to feed myself,” he had disclosed.
The suspect was later handed over to Man-o-War operatives who promised to take him to the office of the Agro-Rangers.
Theft of cashew nuts from the farm is a worrisome practice to cashew farmers and many have found it unavoidable to protect their farms using traditional means. Some cashew nuts thieves have died mysteriously in the past.
Cashew nut is a produce that attracts large volume of investments to Nigeria as many Asian entrepreneurs especially purchase tonnes of nuts for export annually. Ogbomoso cashew nut is considered to be of the best quality nut in Nigeria and so is highly sought.
