OPINION: Ibadan, the local champions
No matter the struggle of the jungle, the lion will not eat grass! It seems that the reverse is the case for the beautiful and largest city in Africa, Ibadan.
Many believe that Ibadan will live to outshine other Western states and Nigeria at large due to being the “home of firsts” not only in Nigeria but Africa, yet Ibadan remains the horse picture in the textbook which has no effect when it comes to the physical race.
Thousands of people envisaged that Ibadan people would lead while others will follow just as the slogan of (we) ” the manager”.Lead for what? You’re being inquisitive! Anyway, the indigenes of Ibadan land are expected to lead in the aspect of securing the presidency amomg the Southern Nigerian cities even in the whole country. But this isn’t the case.
Ibadan was the capital of Western colonial administration in 1893 and also Western Region capital since 1939, but it’s refused to utilize the privilege to control the affairs of the country unlike Kaduna, capital of Northern Region that controls the power at the centre.
There must be a commendation to Lagos state in large quantity which played host to the Federal Capital Territory since inception and never faded away like Ibadan. One will not forget Chief Ladoke Akintola erstwhile Premier, Western Region who brought Ibadan people to the limelight in politics i.e, national politics. Much to the effort put in place by Gen. Buba Marwa, Lateef Kayode Jakande, Chief Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, domiciled in Lagos and now aspiring to be Nigeria’s president, God- willing, Lagos State is towering high.
Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, massively voted-for Chief M.K.O Abiola, Late Chief Ernest Shonekan head of Interim National Government and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo the No2 citizen of the country presently, are from “Egbaland” Abeokuta in Ogun State. These men from Ogun State unlike the people of Ibadan land have ensured their area had a good show in the business of piloting the affairs of the country. Rather, Ibadan people have subjected themselves only to vying for the governorship with other geopolitical zones in Oyo State. What a ridiculous act!
Arise and shine again the warriors.
