The emergence of a new Soun of Ogbomosoland is currently being threatened by a court injunction being sought by three families who are demanding they be made part of the ruling houses of the Soun Ruling Dynasty of Ogbomoso.
The three families, Oluopo, Ologolo and Olukan on December 20, 2021, 8 days after the passage of the last Soun, Oba (Dr) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III JP, CON, CFR, approached the High Court of Oyo State (Ogbomoso Judicial Division) to pray the court to stop the selection of a new Soun unless they are made part of the ruling houses.

The late Soun

The three families in Suit No. HOG/43/2021 which are claiming “to be entitled to be included in the Soun of Ogbomoso Chieftaincy Declaration as Ruling Houses,” want the court’s determination on the following question: “The claimants having been confirmed as royal families/direct descendants of past Souns of Ogbomoso by the judgment of the Oyo Stat High Court per Hon. Justice O.A. Boade in Suit No. HOG/53/2001 – Prince Kareem Oyewumi & 4 Ors. v. Suleiman Atoyebi Ajila & 5 Ors., delivered on 6th August, 2007, whether it is not repugnant to natural justice, equity and good conscience for the claimants’ families to have been excluded from the extant Soun of Ogbomoso Chieftaincy Declaration of 1958, royal lineage/past Souns’s descent being the ‘fundamental factor that qualifies the existing recognised/declared ruling houses?”
The three families represented by Prince Ibrahem Najeem-Olasubu (for himself and on behalf of Oluopo Royal Family), Prince Mustapha Adebayo(for himself and on behalf of Ologolo Royal Family) and Prince Solomon Oladokun Olatunbosun (for himself and on behalf of Olukan Royal Family) who are the claimants therefore seek three reliefs from the court, “An order of this Honourable Court directing the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Defendants to include the claimants’ royal families as ruling houses in the Soun of Ogbomoso Chieftaincy Declaration.
“An Order of injunction restraining the 1st, 2nd and 3rd defendants from installing any person as the new Soun of Ogbomoso until the inclusion of the claimants’ royal families as ruling houses in the Soun of Ogbomoso Chieftaincy Declaration.
“An Order of injunction restraining the 4th, 5th, 6th 7th and 8th defendants or any member of their respective families from being installed or parading himself as the new Soun of Ogbomoso until the inclusion of the claimants’ royal families as ruling houses in the Soun of Ogbomoso Chieftaincy Declaration.”
The 1st to 8th defendants are the Oyo state governor, attorney-general of Oyo state, Oyo state commissioner for local governments and chieftaincy affairs, Prince Sikiru Oyeyiola (Mogaji Gbagun Ruling House), Prince Amos Oloyede Olaoye (Mogaji Laoye Ruling House), Prince Samuel Oyedeji (Mogaji Bolanta Ruling House) Prince Ilufoye Olayode (Mogaji Odunaro Ruling House) and Prince Olawuyi Oyelayo Itabiyi (Mogaji Aburumaku Ruling House) respectively.
The matter is billed to come up again in court tomorrow, January 10.
