Give us another worthy Soun, Akala charges Laoye ruling house, kingmakers
Former governor of Oyo state, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala has spoken the minds of millions of Ogbomoso people concerning the selection of a new Soun of Ogbomosoland.
It is recalled that the last Soun, Oba (Dr) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III JP CON CFR, passed on, on Sunday, December 12, 2021, after 48 years on the throne. He was buried same day according to Islamic rites at the Royal Sepulchre within the palace (called Abata).
The demise of Oba Oyewumi has thus created a big vacuum. The ruling house to produce the next Soun is Bayewuwon Kelebe (Laoye), which is the third in the order of rotation. The order is Toyeje (Abuirumaku), Oluwusi (Gbagun), Bayewuwon (Laoye), Bolanta and Odunaro. Oba Oyewumi came out of Gbagun Ruling House.
All eyes are thus on Laoye Ruling House as well as on the kingmakers composed of Areago (head), Jagun, Bara, Ikolaba, Abese, Balogun and Iyalode.
Otunba Alao-Akala therefore captured the mood of the community when he demanded that the Laoye Ruling House produce a Soun greater than the departed monarch.
The former governor stated this on Monday at the 2021 Annual General Meeting of Egbe Omo Ogbomoso Parapo Agbaaye held at Ogunlola Hall.
Hear Akala, “To the kingmakers, l want to remind us that our late Oba uplifted Ogbomoso to its highest pitch ever. Whoever will emerge must not be someone who will let it plummet. We need another Soun that is brave and smart.”
Akala even suggested that if there is a good prince who isn’t showing interest in the throne he should be persuaded .
“If we know a prince that is good, that is worthy, go and beg him. Look for a good prince, even if he doesn’t have money we will help him look for it. We don’t want an Oba that will not be smart and sharp. It must be someone who will command respect and fear.
”Help us choose someone who is worthy. We will rally round him. The next Soun must be an Oba who will be able to hold his own in the comity of Obas and Chiefs.”
The words of the Bobagunwa of Ogbomosoland resonated well with the audience as a loud applause greeted them when he stopped.
It’s generally believed that the immediate past Soun Oba Oyewumi performed creditably well as Oba leading Ogbomoso “to global fame,” to quote Akala in his tribute to the Oba earlier.
Qualities such as courage, vision, foresight, steadfastness, focus, confidence and so on marked him out and were the forte of the inimitable Oba Ajagungbade III.
It therefore implies that not less is required of the next Soun.
