Ogbomoso model school: Completed, vandalized due to unuse, again rebuilt but still unoccupied
Governance in Nigeria will never cease being amazing with impunity. The plethora of oddities that intersperse the political narrative is what continues to reinforce such. Or how does one explain the events that surround a model secondary school in Ogbomoso, Oyo state?
The construction of this architectural masterpiece to be occupied by Millennium Model Secondary School, Oke-Owode, was begun by the administration of former governor of the state, Chief Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala.
The administration of late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, Alao-Akala’s successor, completed the project but it was never occupied by the school it’s meant for, rather it was locked leading to its being vandalized. Also, the roofs were blown off and depreciation quickly set in. It was later learnt that the contractor was being owed and so, he refused to release the keys to the edifice.
It’s an irony however that the school to occupy it is currently squatting on the premises of Ogbomoso Grammar School, at the part whose buildings have seen better days.
Meanwhile, the current administration led by Engr Seyi Makinde has rebuilt and improved the structure raising huge hope that it would now be utilized but almost a year after refurbishment the building is still under locks and keys. Thus, another round of vandalization is about setting in. This was confirmed to ogbomosoinsightonline.com by a man met at the gate of the building last week who claimed to be the night guard. He lamentably complained that a section of the toilet was being damaged by vandals.
The structure has many facilities including several classrooms, examination halls, offices, administrative block, laboratories, perimeter fence etc and is supplied with electricity. That it is still being left to rot is paradigmatic of our system’s aberrant character and a sordid pronouncement of our culture of waste.
It is nevertheless hoped that the attention of the Oyo state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, will be drawn to the situation and consequently expedite action on how Millennium Model Secondary School will relocate to the edifice. It is a disservice if it continues to suffer neglect and abandonment, which is a recipe for vandalization moreover after (second) completion of the project.
