Military brutality in Ogbomoso: Army headquarters promises to investigate

Sequel to the brutal attack by men of the Nigerian Army against youths on volunteer services at Caretaker area, and pedestrians in Ogbomoso on Tuesday, the Defence headquarters has promised to launch an investigation into the matter. had reported that the soldiers numbering about 250 were in transit on the day when they came upon a traffic snarl at the area following which they pounced on everyone in sight including members of the Ogbomoso Community Youth Forum, OCYF, who voluntarily were undertaking the repairs of the trunk A road linking western and northern Nigeria through the metropolis. In the melee, a Fulani man being conveyed on a motorcycle was hit with gun butt on the head causing him to slip into coma.
As at the last count the wounded man had been referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
This sparked an outrage with many condemning the action of the soldiers and describing it as the demonstration of the contempt with which they hold the civilians and as an unprofessional conduct.
It was learnt that Soun of Ogbomosoland Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III paid the bills for the hospital treatment of the several victims involved.
Also, General Oladayo Popoola (rtd), a former military governor of Oyo state and who is an indigene of Ogbomoso, as well as the Soun palace had informed military authorities of the bestial conduct of the soldiers.
A step was informed was also taken by the leadership of OCYF, which petitioned the Defence headquarters via WhatsApp platform.
In its response, the army acknowledged the petition and promised to look into it.
“Thanks for your message. We’re away and can’t respond right now. We appreciate you reaching out. We will respond accordingly to your enquiries once we are available. Thank you.”
Also, it says, “Please, be informed that investigation is ongoing in respect of the message you sent.”
