October 24, 1973, 48 years ago, was the day the reigning Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III JP, CON, CFR, was chosen by the Oluwusi/Gbagun Ruling Family of the Soun Dynasty of Ogbomoso as Oba-elect.
This followed the demise of the last traditional ruler of the town, Oba Salami Ajiboye Itabiyi III, in June 1973, who had spent less than a year on the throne.
On July 12, 1973, the Ogbomoso Local Government Council communicated the head of Gbagun ruling family for nominations into the vacant stool of Soun of Ogbomosoland, as it was the turn of the House of Gbagun. The five ruling houses in turn are Toyeje/Abuirumaku, Gbagun, Bayewuwon/Laoye, Bolanta and Odunaro.
The family however resolved on July 17 that only a nominee will be forwarded to the kingmakers and not nominees, to avoid a situation where an unpopular candidate within the family would emerge.
The then Prince Oladunni Oyewumi had ingratiated himself with the family all along, his amiability and affability, standing him in a good stead.
He indicated interest in the throne so also was an a elder brother, Prince Akintoye Jacob Ayoola Oyewumi, as well as others. But the two went into the contest on July 17, 1973. It was a tense moment though it turned out a piece of cake for Prince Oladunni Oyewumi. He was well loved personality, a successful businessman, a socialite and a goal getter.
Out of 104 votes cast by the family members that day, Prince Oladunni Oyewumi notched 100 while his opponent had a paltry 4.
His nomination was ratified by the kingmakers 6 days later on July 23, and on October 24, the government approved the appointment.
Thus, October 24 will remain a memorable day in the history of Ogbomoso as the day the appointment of its greatest monarch in over a century, and one of the greatest ever, was approved.
ogbomosoinsightonline.com congratulates Oba (Dr) Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III, JP, CON, CFR on the 48th anniversary of his appointment. Wishing His Imperial Majesty more fruitful years and sound health.
