Rev’d Akanmu, pioneer Secretary (President), Ogbomoso Baptist Conference dies at 79
Death has snatched away the first Conference Secretary (now President), Ogbomoso Baptist Conference, Rev’d. Dr. Samson Akanmu.
Rev’d Akanmu died yesterday evening, at about 6’0 clock at a private hospital in Ogbomoso during a brief illness.
According to a source, he fell ill Wednesday and was admitted at the private hospital (names withheld), where his son is a medical doctor.
He was already recovering in health and indeed was billed to deliver a spiritual lecture yesterday at a Baptist association gathering and was willing to go but was prevailed upon not to go to deliver the lecture so he could further rest.
“Baba consequently asked a junior colleague to stand in for him,” the source disclosed, adding, “The pastor who delivered the lecture on his behalf went back to report to him after the assignment. Baba exuded happiness and had repeatedly clapped in praises to God. The man even handed over the money given to him by the organzers as a token of appreciation which Rev’d Akanmu however declined to collect. So, it wasn’t an illness one would consider serious. But he passed on shortly after receiving the pastor.”
Late Rev’d Akanmu was a fervent man of God, a popular marriage counsellor, who touched many marriages positively.
He started his pastorate career at Alagbede Baptist Church in Ogbomoso area as a certificate pastor after which he obtained university and theological degrees up to the PhD level.
He was pastor at First Baptist Church, Oshodi in Lagos state, from where he heeded the call to serve at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Okelerin, Ogbomoso in 1990, after the departure of Rev’d Oludare from Ekiti state.
He was at Ebenezer Baptist Church till he retired in 2007.
He served the lord wholeheartedly all through his life. At the Associational and Conference levels he was very active. He was moderator of an Association while in Lagos. And in Ogbomoso, he was also Association moderator and was first Secretary (now President) Ogbomoso Baptist Conference and when the pioneer chairman, Rev’d John Adegoke Okesiji of First Baptist Church, Okelerin rotated out Rev’d Akanmu assumed the position.
He served the Christian community generally in several capacities. Rev’d Dr John Oladapo Adetutu told ogbomosoinsightonline.com that the deceased was actively involved in organizing many big crusades in Ogbomoso such as those by Reinhard Bonke, Bishop Francis Wale Oke and others. “We will miss him, his passage is painful. I was close to him. When he was at First Baptist Church Oshodi l was at First Baptist Church, Shogunle, which was founded by his church. He was a revered man of God known well to Baba Soun (His Imperial Majesty Oba Oladunni Oyewumi Ajagungbade III JP, CON, CFR, Soun of Ogbomosoland).”
His residence behind the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital LTH Ogbomoso is presently being thronged by sympathizers on condolence visits.
The family meanwhile is yet to announce the burial arrangement of the departed servant of God.
